Well to start things off the reason I made this blog is because it’s apart of a independent study program at my high school, that I’m enrolled in called “Senior Project”। The whole idea behind the program is that we (the students) come up with a question or thesis, do the research, and produce something that shows what we learned from that research that we and others can gain from। Then at the end of the year showcase it for two grade credits that will act as one Advance Placement (AP) credit. There are about five seniors who were accepted into the program including myself. All of us had to create a proposal (mines which was 16 pages), do budgeting for the project, and present it to a panel of Senior Project committee members. Some who where teachers from our school but also, college professors, and directors affiliated with the school. So after a week of gut-wrenching anticipation after I also fainted during the presentation (I was so nervous), I was accepted into the program!
Now for my project entitled “Structural Beauty” the presentation of this project will be a fashion show that will exhibit all of the looks that I’ve created during the year। There will be approximately 5 to 10 looks, 1 to 2 per room for each area of the apartment (the living room, bedroom, bathroom, half room, and kitchen). The looks themselves may be sold, however, only by commission; all the money will be contributed 50%. Which leads me to when I remember when it was still new to my family that I had a learning disability, called a “Visual Deficit Disorder”, and ironically I’m now a growing visual Artist. Therefore, all of the money gained from this will be donated to an organization that aids children with special needs, or learning disorders, within the U.S. I wanted to choose am organization that would mean something to me personally. This opportunity has placed itself in my hands and I’m taking full advantage to help others.
My inspiration for this project comes from my current circumstance, and the state of my personal affairs for the past year and a half। During this time my mother and I have moved four times, for reasons I am not ready to express. This experience has made me more aware of my living space, in general. Each place that we’ve lived in has been a rest stop to where my mother and are I now and will be in the future. Not in the sense of physical living space, but how we’ve matured mentally and emotionally. Both my mother and I have defined out own meanings of domesticity from the female perspective. With this project I hope to articulate some of these experiences, as well as how it’s shaped my opinion on female domesticity. Part of my opinion can be scoped by looking at how women are defined in today’s society, and in the past. All this has inspired me to ask: How can architectural details in a domestic setting transcend the contemporary idea of female domesticity through wearable Art (fashion)?
So now that I’ve given the logistics of this project I’m interested in knowing any opinions, suggestions, comments, or concerns you may have. Please remember I’m still in high school and a senior so if it takes me a few days or weeks to respond please know it’s not because I’m too busy trying to apply for college and graduate ;). In the meantime enjoy!
